Hi filbay, this is usually a symptom of running rich with SAI in place, the popping is unburnt fuel getting burnt off when it hits the fresh oxygenated air injected just after the exhaust valve’s.

Hello, I have a 2009 Bonneville SE which has developed an annoying habit. I start it up on the choke , warm it up etc. but for the first mile or so it backfires and generally misbehaves ! If I then open up the throttle for a quick burst it seems to drive through it , then everything is fine.
