What is a stator coil?
The stator is the coil of wire housed inside the engine case. A magnet on a shaft spins within the stator, creating alternating current (AC). That current travels along fairly heavy gauge wire through the case and into the rectifier/regulator which converts it to DC power, and at a consistent output.
What’s the best way to test an ignition coil?
Learn how testing the ignition coil can be quick and easy using a special ignition system tester. It’s inexpensive and works for any small engine. Connect the tester between the spark plug boot and the spark plug. Then start the engine and watch the tester.
How can I tell if my starter coil is bad?
Use your hand to pull the plastic boot off the spark plug, and detach the grounding wire from the spark plug. Clip one end of the spark plug tester to the exposed spark plug, and insert the long metal end of the tester into the plastic spark plug boot. Always On. Always Open. 100% Digital.
Where is the measuring resistor on an ignition coil?
For single-spark coils, the second output of the secondary winding is routed to ground via terminal 4b. A measuring resistor is installed in the ground wire to monitor ignition; this provides the electronic control unit with a measurement of the drop in voltage caused by the ignition current during sparkover.
Can a motorcycle ignition coil be tested without a battery?
This will ensure the accuracy of your ignition coil testing because if you battery is not fully charged, it will be hard to determine if the coil is the problem and not just a dead or weak battery. Access the wiring for your ignition coils by opening the housing.

What should the resistance of a coil be?
Your result should be very low around 0.5 to 1.5 Ohms. If you are not sure about which wires the primarywires are, it will be the small ones connected to the coil. Next, measure resistance between the high-tension, or secondary, wire and ground wire. This result should be high around 6000 to 13000 ohms.
