What is a Double-J ureteral stent?
A ureteric stent (also called a J-J stent or double-J stent) is a thin, flexible plastic tube which is curled at both ends to avoid damaging the kidney and urinary bladder and to prevent it from dislocating. The stent is placed so that its upper end is in the kidney and its lower end is in the urinary bladder.
Is a double-J stent painful?
The D-J-related discomfort may be due to: (1) irritation of the bladder mucosa, especially the trigone, by the bladder coil of the stent; (2) smooth muscle spasm; and (3) reflux of urine. These can result in symptoms such as LUTS, pain of voiding, and flank soreness.
How do you insert a double J stent?
A tube with a tiny optic camera is inserted through the urethra into your bladder. The bladder is inspected, and the ureteric opening is located. The stent is placed by sliding it over a flexible wire inserted into the ureter. The procedure is usually performed with the patient asleep (under general anaesthesia).
Can you exercise with ureteral stent?
You can continue to exercise whilst you have the stent in place. You may experience pain and discomfort in the kidney area and see blood in your urine. This may happen after strenuous exercise due to irritation caused by the stent. You can continue to work normally.
Why double J stent is used?
Double-J ureteral stents are commonly used to manage urinary obstructions. Pain, bladder irritative symptoms, and fever are usually signs of early complications related to double-J stents; late complications are more troublesome.
How is a double J stent removed?

In this procedure the patient is made to lie down on a table and a local anesthetic Jelly is placed in the urinary passage after which a scope is inserted and the DJ stent is visualized and extracted using an endoscopic forceps.
When can a double J stent be removed?
