What happens when crankshaft pulley fails?
When a crankshaft pulley fails (or the timing belt due to a badly maintained crankshaft pulley), the timing of the engine is completely thrown off. Even a rotation or movement of a few millimetres can start to cause problems in a system so precise.
How do you know if you have a bad crank pulley?
The most obvious bad crankshaft pulley symptom is a violent shaking of your car engine. This happens because as the crankshaft balancer starts to fail, it will lose its harmonic performance. Your engine will shake violently and will be most common during high speeds.

Since you’re doing this much work, it would be a shame if bad pulleys are the root cause and you re-use them. Once you have the new belt on, rotate the crankshaft twice by hand (with a wrench, of course) and re-check that the timing marks on the camshafts line up properly when the crankshaft is back to TDC. (Remember, twice around).
When to set the cams on a crankshaft?
I would suggest at this point in time that you start with the crankshaft at 30° before top dead center and set the cams. At this point, there will be plenty of clearance for valve in every cylinder. When the cams are in position, then rotate the crankshaft to TDC and install the belt.
Can a camshaft be turned without a belt?
However, both camshafts need to be lined up with the timing marks as well as the crankshaft turned to TDC before you install the belt to keep everything lined up correctly.
