What does MEChA stand for?

MEChA is an acronym that stands for Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán. MEChA chapters are often the only groups on campus that seek to open the doors of higher education for our communities and strive for a society free of imperialism, racism, sexism, and homophobia.
Did MEChA change its name?
Name change At the 2016 National MEChA Conference in Tucson, AZ; the name of the Organization was changed to Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán. In April 2019, student leaders voted to drop “Chicano” and “Aztlán” from the group name.

The concept of transforming mecha was pioneered by Japanese mecha designer Shōji Kawamori in the early 1980s, when he created the Diaclone toy line in 1980 and then the Macross anime franchise in 1982.
Why was MEChA created?
Their main objective was to promote unity amongst students on campus and ensure graduation. The group was one of the first to arise in California, with the ultimate goal of uniting all Mexican American organizations, groups, and clubs under a single banner.

MEChA’s main purpose is to encourage more Latinos to enter and finish college. MEChA is also where Chicano/Mexicano and other Latino students organize for political purposes such as fighting for latino student rights and other progressive political causes. MEChA was formed during the 1960s.
