What does knocking noise at start up mean?
Noise did not occur after sitting overnight. Noise duration is too short to track down. Noise is closer to a light tapping, definitely not a heavy thump. Similar to an exhaust manifold leak, but not as loud. Noise does not happen every time. More likely to occur after the truck has been sitting a few days. Ed B. cigroller July 6, 2016, 2:18am #7
Why does my car make a rattling noise when I start it?
An engine rattling noise, or a clicking sound in an engine, can spring up from a number of sources. Whether it’s engine knocking when accelerating or some kind of spark knock or just a general engine noise, some are more serious than others, but there’s one thing that’s true of them all: it’s never good to leave it alone.
Why does my Blazer make a knocking noise when I start it up?
2000 Blazer 4wd, automatic, 122000 miles In the last couple of weeks, if the Blazer isn’t driven for 3 or more days, there is a slight knocking noise for 15 to 20 seconds after start up. Oil level and pressure are fine. I’m guessing it’s the lifters, but I’m open to any suggestions.
What causes the kocking sound on start-up that disappears?
Depending on how cold it is or I guess long it’s sitting, I’ve heard it do it for about 30 seconds and then stop. Sometimes turning the steering wheel will cause it to stop or quieten it up until it completely disappears. Once it disappears, u never hear it for the rest of the day. As for the flex pipe, just look under the car at it.
What makes a little knocking noise at start up?
Another possibility is piston slap but that would likely take a little longer to go away as the pistons heat and expand. A little piston slap at startup is harmless as is a little temporary loose valve lifter noise. edb1961 July 6, 2016, 2:18am #6 Four months and 1300 miles since last oil change.

What was the loud cold start knock that went away?
A few months ago my nephew went to a quick oil change place and they talked him into a “engine cleaning”. They added it to his oil, ran it for 15 minutes, drained the oil, changed the filter and refilled with oil. On his way home, the truck with 101,000 miles on it threw a rod, popped it right out of the side of the block.
Is it normal for a VW engine to rattle?
I’ve certainly heard the same thing from many modern VW/Audi engines and professionally I consider it normal and harmless, although I find their 4 cylinder engines to be absurdly noisy in general and find that startup noise and general engine noise unacceptable personally.
Why does my engine make a knocking sound?
What is Engine Knocking. Left untreated, it can cause damage to the piston and cylinder wall. A knocking sound can also be caused by a lack of lubrication in the upper cylinder head area. This is typically a ticking sound that is created by valves and lifters that are loose or not receiving enough oil.
What should I do if I hear a knocking noise in my car?
If your engine develops a knocking noise while driving, usually it’s quickly followed by a red or amber warning light on the dash notifying the driver there is a problem. If the light is red, I highly recommend shutting off the engine, red means STOP! If the light is amber, I recommend taking it easy…
