What causes a throttle body to stick?
The throttle body is a component attached to an engine’s intake manifold. It houses the butterfly valve. If there is too much carbon buildup in this valve, something that can happen over time, it may get stuck or have trouble moving, which can lead to a sticky gas pedal.
Why is my throttle pedal stiff?
If it is stiff now, but wasn’t before, you may have binding in the throttle body/carburetor, the control linkage, or the accelerator cable. It might be something that can be resolved with lubrication, or you may have some worn components that need to be replaced.
How much HP does a throttle body add?
Will a Throttle Body Spacer Increase Horsepower? Gains from a throttle body can be dependent on modifications. Generally speaking, anytime a throttle body is added, there will be some added horsepower. The amounts can range from 5-25 HP depending on what other modifications are done to the engine.
What are the symptoms of a bad throttle positioning sensor?
- An unexplainable bucking and jerking in the vehicle.
- Sudden idle surges.
- Sudden engine stalling without any apparent reason.
- Hesitation while accelerating.
- Sudden surges in speed while driving on the highway.
- Intermittently flashing of check engine light for no apparent reason.
- Difficulties in changing gears.
How do I know if my throttle body is bad?
Here are the most common signs a failing throttle body we’ve seen in our shop:
- Grime buildup. Dirt and grime can build up inside the part’s housing (some mechanics call this “coking”) causing an interruption in air-fuel flow.
- Electrical problems.
- Airflow disruptions.
- Poor or high idle.
- The ominous check engine light.
How much does it cost to fix a sticky accelerator?
The entire replacement process will cost you between $130 and $200. Labor costs don’t have much of a range- somewhere between $70 and $90. But the parts may cost you as little as $50 or as much as $120+.
How do you know if your throttle body is stuck?
When a throttle body is not functioning correctly, some noticeable characteristics may be poor or very low idle. This can include stalling when coming to a stop or very low idle after starting, or even stalling if the throttle is quickly pressed (resulting in the throttle body plate opening and closing very quickly).
Can you clean the throttle body on a Subaru Outback?
As noted in a previous thread, I recently cleaned the throttle body on my 1998 Subaru Outback… the Subaru dealership recommended this as a part of their 150,000 mile service, but I was unwilling to pay $500 for the entire package, so I opted to do as much of it as possible myself.

Do you remove the blade on a Subaru Outback?
The bolts themselves were set so that you could only orient the sensor body one way on the TB. I didn’t remove the TPS. What I DID do was remove the blade to clean and to gain better access to the mouth of the TB (the mouth faces the windhshield such that you almost have to stand on your head in the engine compartment to be able to see inside).
Can a car stall with a bad throttle position sensor?
The engine can stall for no reason and without any warning. This happens when the TPS gives incorrect information to the ECM. The engine can stall at high speed, at low speed, or even at idle. A faulty throttle position sensor will not let your car accelerate normally. Though this doesn’t happen all the time.
