What are the problems with a 1981 Shovelhead?
Shovelhead starting problems. I have owned a 1981 shovelhead FLH since it was new. When starting it yesterday, I had to push the starter button 5 times before it turned over. The battery is new, the starter button connected because of a strong clicking from the lower left side just above the trans.

Use new gaskets for re-assembly. REMOVE the battery so the chains and sprockets do not remove your fingers. Wondering if i should replace the starter relay while I have this all apart.

Click to expand… The starter drive should only rotate in one direction,if it goes both ways it’s toast…Good luck… Had a look in the manual and not alot of info there regarding my problem, had another look at it today. The bendix seems alright, it engages, but thats about it. Then the starter shaft just spins.
Can you kick start a hot Harley Davidson?
Nice bike! never have had the oppertunity to kick start one. maybe someday. If you haven’t to kick start a hot harley on a warm day…believe me you haven’t missed a thing…. I used to have a 1977 XLCH that I would leave running at gas stations just to avoid that kind of situation.

Is it normal not to kick start a Harley?

What kind of oil filter does a 1975 Shovelhead have?
Bought a 1975 Shovelhead a while back from a very shady character and among other things, when you start the engine, it starts puking tons of oil all over the floor. There is a braided metal line about 6-8″ long with a small filter on the end of it. Looks like a crank case breather line, on the right side of the engine.
When does Shovelhead ignition go into advanced mode?
1. I have the ign mode in Race (No VOES) even though it says it’s for high compression motors. If you look at the curves it is always advanced at least 5 degrees. The OEM (VOES) curve has 0 advances until about 700 RPM.

What to do about crankcase pressure on Shovelhead V-twin?
Start the engine and let it run at idle for a while with a drain pan under the crank case vent line. This may take a bit of time but it will eventually purge itself of excess oil. Hope this helps! I personally do not perscribe to the hammer and ball method for working on oil pumps.
