What are symptoms of trichinosis?
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and abdominal discomfort are often the first symptoms of trichinellosis. Headaches, fevers, chills, cough, swelling of the face and eyes, aching joints and muscle pains, itchy skin, diarrhea, or constipation may follow the first symptoms.
Does bear meat have trichinosis?
People get trichinosis when they eat undercooked meat — such as pork, bear, walrus or horse — that is infected with the immature form (larvae) of the trichinella roundworm. In nature, animals are infected when they feed on other infected animals.
Do grizzly bears have parasites?
Trichinella parasites can infect a wide range of animals worldwide. In the lower 48 states, trichinellosis cases and outbreaks have been caused by the consumption of brown and black bear, wild boar, and cougar; in Alaska, walrus and black, brown, grizzly, and polar bear; and in Hawaii, wild boar.

Polar bears primarily feed on fat, which is relatively free of parasites; however, larvae of the Trichinella parasite have been confirmed in polar bears throughout their range, and antibodies to the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii have been found in polar bears in Alaska (U.S.), Greenland and Svalbard (Norway).
Will trichinosis go away on its own?
Trichinosis usually isn’t serious and often gets better on its own, usually within a few months. However, fatigue, mild pain, weakness and diarrhea may linger for months or years. Your doctor may prescribe medications depending on your symptoms and the severity of infection.
Can deer carry trichinosis?
“Even healthy-looking animals can carry germs that can make you sick.” Over the past two years, three have been outbreaks of trichinellosis (trichinosis) and toxoplasmosis in Wisconsin residents who ate undercooked meat from bear and deer infected with the parasites that cause these diseases.
Can trichinosis be cured?
Trichinosis doesn’t always require treatment. The infection may resolve without treatment within several months after the onset of symptoms. However, the condition is often treated with medications to help manage symptoms and to prevent complications from developing.
