Is there a shifting problem with a Turbo 400 Trans?
Shifting problem with a Turbo 400 Trans. I have a shifting problem with a Turbo 400 Trans. The problem is when the truck is cold the gears will hold; 1st to 2nd will shift at 25mph, 2nd to 3rd will shift at 70 mph. After the truck warms up (10 – 15 minutes of driving) it will shift fine. 3rd gear will kick in at 45mph.
Why does my TH400 downshift when under load?
When the engine is under load and vac is low, the line pressure in the trans will go up. This increases the holding power of the clutch packs, increases oil flow to the torque converter, and delays the shift. If you disconnect the vacuum to the modulator the pressure in the trans will go to max and the trans will shift later and harsher.
How to troubleshoot a Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission?
Check the linkages. The linkages that are connected to the shift lever can get out of alignment at times, causing sloppy or difficult shifter response. Look for abnormalities such as bent or broken parts, loose attachment points, or blockages that would prevent smooth shifting. Change the filter.

When it came time to find out what the common formalities are with this transmission, both mentioned the “late shift” issue. Occasionally, the TH350 will hesitate on shifts, and this can be caused by a number of things, including; a vacuum line leak, a blown modulator, or the bolts on the hold-down plate not being tightened down securely.
Why is my transmission not shifting to third gear?
If you ignore the signs for too long, it could lead to a possible failure of the transmission. Let’s see what could be the reasons for the auto gearbox not to shift from second gear to the third. Overheating could be a reason for the gear to stick and the low fluid level is the culprit for making the transmission overheated.
Why does my TH400 go through all 3 Gears?
I figured this to be a problem stock gear shifter, and vacuum kick down. If I was in water pit, the car would go through all three gears. When trying to not burn out and accelerating, it goes clear through 1st, then hits 2nd. The 2nd gear lasts for like 1-2 second then shifts directly to 3rd.
