Is the Mazda MX5 stalling out at idle?

I’ve had my 1992 Mazda Miata MX5 since 2009. It has 90,000 miles on it. Lately I have had a problem with the car stalling out at idle (when I stop for a light ) This is after I have driven it long enough to heat it up completely.

Why does my car stall in the Cold?

Engine stalling is more likely to occur during cold weather or when starting a cold engine. So, this kind of engine stalling problem often means the engine is not getting enough fuel and/or too much air. A cold engine needs a fairly rich fuel mixture to start, and to idle smoothly while it warms up.

What causes an engine to stall while idling?

This can upset the air/fuel mixture causing idle, stalling and hesitation problems. Cleaning the airflow sensor wire with aerosol electronics cleaner; can often restore normal operation and cure the problem. If the engine stalls while idling or driving, the engine may be running out of fuel.

What should I do about my Miata stalling at idle?

I took the Miata to a good repair place and they cleaned the throttle assembly and adjusted the warm idle. It’s been running well since then. And the good news is, after charging $78 just to bring it in and look at it, the bill came to $85 plus tax.

What’s the problem with my Mazda MX 5 Miata?

Miata.net has some discussion about “idle dropping” and Mazda’s seeming unwillingness to acknowledge this problem, but no definitive solutions. My dealer mechanic is not sure and says we must go down the list replacing this and that beginning with the cam sensor, then the fuel pump, and then the coil.

Why does my 2005 Miata start and stall?

My 2005 Miata (non-turbo) started idling poorly, then progressed to stalling, and the Check Engine light came on. It sure seemed like a sensor problem. I had the codes read. There was a fair list of them. I reset the faults by momentarily disconnecting the battery. The faults came back. So I started replacing the likely sensors. Nothing helped.

Why does my car stall at highway speeds?

The engine may start and idle fine, but run out of power or even stall at highway speeds. If the engine starts right back up after stalling, the likely cause is low fuel volume delivery because of a weak pump. If the engine is running normally one minute, but suddenly quits, loss of ignition may be the problem.

Why does my Mazda Miata not start up?

Then while driving, the car will erratically lose power. The rpm’s will drop down to almost nothing and then spike back up. It was fine for a few more minutes and then just completely lost power and shut down and would not start up again. I had the car towed to my house and tried starting it the next day and it started right up.

How often does my Mazda Miata lose power?

Occassionally, I start my ’99 Miata and the engine idles poorly, it revs up with difficulty, but it runs. Then I take it out on the highway, and after 10 minutes it starts losing power and the catalytic converter gets so hot I can smell it inside the car. This happens once a month. The runs again the next day.

What’s the standard idle speed for a Miata?

Factory spec for the Miata specifies standard timing as 10 before top dead center (10 BTDC) 1 at idle speed (850 rpm). If your timing is advanced more than this, you may experience pinging under some conditions.

Why are the ignition wires on my Miata not working?

Common Problem! The factory ignition wires on the Miata only seem to last between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. If you are experiencing misfiring and hesitation and you haven’t changed your wires, this is most likely the cause. Change the wires! In case you forget which plugs is which, refer to the firing order diagram below.

What should the ignition timing be on a Miata?

The piston is already beginning to travel back down the cylinder when the combustion occurrs. The piston is therefore travelling a shorter distance under power which translates to power loss. The timing on a stock Miata should be set to 10° before top dead center (10° BTDC) ±1° at 850 RPM idle speed.
