Is it safe to live in a house with Artex?

How do you get rid of Artex swirls?
The most popular way to remove Artex is to use a steamer to loosen it and then ease it off with a scraper. This process is slow but effective, if you hold the steamer in the same place for too long, however, the Artex will liquefy and run everywhere making a mess.
How do you clean Artex?
The best way to clean artex is with gentle suction. Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum that sweeps as it sucks to gently tease dirt away. If the ceiling is really appalling and you have no choice but to use water, keep it as delicate as you can.
How do you seal Artex?
Ensure surface is clean, dry and firmly bonded to the background. Lightly dampen the surface with a large, wet sponge. Remove any loose or prominent texture ‘nibs’ using a stripping knife (or spatula provided, if using Smooth-It kit) Apply Artex Stabilex liberally, to seal the surface, and allow to dry.
Can I skim over artex?
Plastering over artex is a very common part of our trade now. Any artex must have a backing (bonding) coat applied first as as skim coat is only 3 mm thick. Once the bonding coat is dry you apply PVA to reduce suction when skimming the top coat. This will give you the desired flat finish.
Is artex worth removing?
Artex is often considered outdated and removing it can be difficult and dangerous if you’ve never done it before and are not using a safe and non-toxic remover like X-Tex. You can plaster over the textured wall or ceiling covering however this is much like sticking a plaster over something that may rear its head again.
Can you use sugar soap on Artex?
Stippled finish is an Artex or Artex like material pattern not a textured paper, so washing over a pre painted kitchen ceiling with sugar soap would be recommended to remove associated cooking contaminates such as cooking fats would be best advised and rinsing off prior to painting.
Can I paint over Artex?
We don’t recommend you paint straight over Artex, it’ll take several coats no matter how good the paint is. But, if you level out the Artex first, then you can paint it. There are plenty of smoothing products available which can make evening your Artex easy. Once it’s smoothed over and dry, you can paint the ceiling.
