Onions can be purchased in a few forms: seed, sets or transplants. Growing from seed is unquestionably the most economical way to grow onions. It’s also typically the only way to grow unique or unusual varieties.
Is it too late to start onions from seed?
You can plant onions almost any time of year (especially if growing for green onions), but your timing will impact the size of onions you harvest and when they are harvested. Onions will get the signal to form bulbs when the day length in your area is getting the correct number of daylight hours for the variety.
Can you grow onions in May?
This means you can plant onion sets as late as May 18th to still get your onions 100 days of optimum ‘bulbing’ time. They may not be as big as those started by late April but they’ll be perfectly edible.
How do you get seeds from an onion?
Carefully clip the stalks a few inches (8 cm.) below the head and place them in a paper bag. Set the bag in a cool, dry place for several weeks. When the heads are completely dry, shake them vigorously within the bag to release the seeds.

Sowing onion seed. Sow seed in a pot or tray of seed compost. The seeds are small, but try and space them about 1cm apart. Lightly cover with a thin layer of compost then stand pot or tray in water to moisten.
When to sow indoor onions in the UK?
Start to sow indoor onions in the first week of February. You can initially sow the seeds into small modules but they will need to be transplanted into 8cm / 3in pots later on so forget the modules, sow them straight into larger pots and save yourself the bother.
