How much a diesel engine can run?
What makes diesel engines work so well and last so long? It’s normal for your car’s gasoline engine to run for around 200,000 miles before it needs a serious overhaul, or you need a new vehicle. But diesel engines can continuously run for an impressive 1,000,000-1,500,000 miles before needing any major work.
How does a diesel starter work?
A diesel engine needs to rotate between 150 and 250 rpm to start. the purpose of the starting system is to provide the torque needed to achieve the necessary minimum cranking speed. As the starter motor starts to rotate the flywheel, the crankshaft is turned, which then starts piston movement.
Will a diesel engine start on gas?
A diesel engine is not designed to ignite fuel. Gasoline is designed so that it won’t ignite automatically (it requires a spark plug to ignite). Therefore, when gasoline flows into a diesel engine, there will be no ignition that takes place.
Do diesels take longer to start?
Diesel engines have a glow plug in each cylinder to aid starting , especially in cold weather . It takes a few seconds for the glow plug to attain high enough temperature to help warm up the compressed air to ignite the atomized diesel fuel the instant it is injected into the cylinder of highly compressed air .
How do I choose a diesel battery?
We should select the battery for diesel generators according to the starting current (CCA), not according to the capacity (AH). Diesel generator set is different from vehicle, because the main function of battery for diesel generator set is to ensure reliable starting.
Should diesel cars be warmed up?
You should let your engine idle for a few minutes to warm up before getting underway. As noted above, a diesel will not warm to operating temperature until it is under load. Thus you need only let the engine idle long enough to fully circulate the oil—30 seconds is plenty.
Is the GM 8.2 liter diesel engine still running?
Ahhh Yes, the GM 8.2L Fuel Pincher diesel! Widely regarded by almost all who were ever around them as one of the worst diesel engines ever built. One guy on another forum has one that is still running fine in a seasonal usage truck. I drove an early 1980’s F-700 Ford single axle tractor with the 8.2L in it for a year.
Is the Detroit Diesel 8.2 liter engine official?
Thanks to everyone. I’ve heard the same, but don’t remember seeing it in any official writing. The 8.2 was the engine that no one wanted to claim as their responsibility. It suffered from 2 fatal flaws, being asked to do too much and having too few head bolts. TO be fair the Cat 3208 was another engine in that category.
Why does my Detroit Diesel engine not start?
It ran great, started easy all winter, about three weeks ago, began to start hard hot or cold, had to keep fuel pedal to the floor for 5 to 10 seconds then the engine would come to life. Now nothing! New fuel filters did not help (filled them up with fuel to preserve prime).
What are the shortcomings of a Detroit Diesel?

They include a “throw-away” parent bore cylinder block, a tendency toward frequent head gasket failures, a weak “bottom end” and a universally recognized short service life.
