Programming a Single Key
- Insert the key into the ignition, and turn it to the on position.
- Leave the key in this position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds, and then turn it off.
- Turn the key back on, and wait for additional 10 minutes and 30 seconds before turning it off again.
- Repeat the process for a third time.
Can you reprogram a car key yourself?
You can’t, for example, take a remote for your old car and program it to your new car even if they are the same make and model. With newer cars, most likely you will not be able to program a new key yourself. You will have to visit a dealer or locksmith.

The key that you have will not work with this computer until it is programmed via scan tool. The information from the key that allows the engine to run is stored in the PCM. When you put a used PCM in the car it has the key information from the original vehicles key, not your key. When you removed your old PCM the key information went with it.
