How do I know if my V belt is aligned?
Count two V-grooves in from the forward edge (Fig 1). Now, place the smaller plastic alignment segment onto the pulley to be checked. Again, place it two V-grooves in. Look down the length of the steel alignment rod and check that it lines up with the markings on the alignment segment (Fig 2).
Is the reluctor wheel on the rear of the crank?
Most aftermarket crankshaft manufacturers sell LS cranks with the wheel already installed, but it’s possible that you bought a crank where the reluctor wheel is sold separately. This isn’t a simple matter of hammering the wheel onto the rear of the crank.
What kind of wheel is a crankshaft pulley?
A crankshaft pulley, also called a harmonic balance wheel or crankshaft sheave, is a grooved, wheel-shaped device that connects directly to the vehicle’s crankshaft. The crankshaft essentially converts the linear, or straight, movement of pistons into a rotational motion.
When to replace a bad crankshaft pulley in a car?
If the crankshaft pulley were to go bad, it could spell trouble for the entire operation of the vehicle. You would surely notice a lot of diverse symptoms, some worse than others. But you should replace your crankshaft pulley as soon as you notice any of these symptoms.
What causes a crankshaft harmonic balancer to slip?
The harmonic balancers found on many vehicles are constructed as two pieces of metal with a rubber layer in between to dampen the vibrations. If the layers separate or slip, the timing marks, which are usually stamped into the front of the pulley, can shift and thus throw off the placement of the timing marks.
What causes a wheel to go out of alignment?
Curbs One of the most significant reasons your wheel alignment may change is if you have a habit of hitting or driving over curbs. Because curb impact may only affect one or two of your wheels at a time, these wheels may go out of alignment immediately, while your other wheels may take more time to change alignment.

Can a bad pulley cause a bad crankshaft?
Since you’re doing this much work, it would be a shame if bad pulleys are the root cause and you re-use them. Once you have the new belt on, rotate the crankshaft twice by hand (with a wrench, of course) and re-check that the timing marks on the camshafts line up properly when the crankshaft is back to TDC. (Remember, twice around).
What to do if your crankshaft is misaligned?
Valve cover removed so I can manually turn the camshafts by the square built into the camshaft about 1/3 in, told this would avoid snapping anything as I force past the pressure, as opposed to using the camshaft pulley bolt. Either I fix this car myself or it goes to the scrap yard so it is definitely a DIY.
