How do fuel trims work?
Fuel trims are what engine control system use to compensate for all problems relating to air-fuel ratios (known as λ or lambda,) and combustion. The ECM or PCM then uses oxygen sensor readings to find out what the actual air-fuel ratio was, and ‘trims’ the fuel quantities based on this ‘real’ air-fuel ratio.
How is fuel trim different from short-term fuel trim?
There are two forms of air-fuel ratio adjustment: short-term and long-term. Short-term fuel trim happens almost instantly, while long-term fuel trim is a gradual adjustment that happens over longer durations in contrast to the instant adjustment provided by short-term fuel trim. The ECM can only adjust the air-fuel ratio to a certain extent.
What should the air fuel ratio be during fuel trim?
Fuel trim is what the ECM implements to adjust the air-fuel ratio of the engine according to changing driver conditions. The air-fuel ratio should stay at, or very near to 14.7:1. It must stay at this range during idling, going down hills, cruising, and at highway speeds. There are two forms of air-fuel ratio adjustment: short-term and long-term.
When to check fuel trim for engine failure?
Some general guidelines for diagnosing fuel trim and the potential causes for failure can be found below. A useful diagnostic tool is to determine if the fuel trim problem exists in more than one engine operating range. Fuel trim should be checked at idle, at 1,500 rpm and at 2,500 rpm.
What should bank 1 fuel trim be at idle?
If long-term fuel trim (LTFT) for bank 1 is 25% at idle, but corrects to 4% at 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, focus on factors that cause a lean condition at idle, such as a vacuum leak.
What makes the short term fuel trims all about?
Really, the oxygen sensors are what drive the fuel trim readings. Changes in o2 sensor voltages cause a direct change in fuel. The short term fuel trim (STFT) refers to immediate changes in fuel occurring several times per second. The long term fuel trims (LTFT) are driven by the short term fuel trims.

What kind of fuel trim does a 4 cylinder engine use?
If your engine is a 4 cylinder, then it has only one bank, Bank 1. On a V-style engine you can isolate which bank is running rich or lean by watching that bank’s fuel trims. If one bank is running properly, and another isn’t you can narrow down a developing problem to one side of the engine or the other.
