Yes there is. Firstly there are petroleum based oils, semi synthetic oils and fully synthetic oils. Fully synthetics are the best. Do not use anything else if you want to keep your engine for a long time.
What kind of engine oil does Asda sell?
Popped into my local Asda yesterday and saw they are selling their own branded 5 litre packs of engine oil for £10 instead of £16 – I’m tempted to buy some (Either 10/40 or 5/30 Semi Synthetic. Does anyone know who supplies it to them? I had read that it is Comma Oil who supply Asda (and Halfords and probably Tescos and a lot of garages too).

I get cheap 20-50 for my MGB for about £10 for 5 litres, I change it quite often though as the car doesn’t do much mileage which will do more damage to the oil.
Is the Asda 20w50 engine a normal engine?
It’s not as simple as thinking that because an engine has a low specific output that it’ll muddle by on Asda’s 20W50. I agree with you, but the 1.0 and 1.2 Corsa engines aren’t normal engines. They are delicate, fragile engines with low oil capacity and a poor oil pump and filter system.

Is it OK to use Asda oil on an old car?
The asda stuff will be fine for normal use in older engines that take it. Have I ever had an engine problem? No Expensive oils. Cheap engine insurance. btw I used cheap crap morrisons oil in my piece-o-s t renault mpv. Glad I did cos eventually it failed terminally on chassis rust. Expensive oil is overrated.
