Does auto start/stop damage your engine?
Stop/Start systems aren’t as potentially damaging as cold starts, though, simply because the engine isn’t cold. Not only are the engines at operating temperature before the stop/start system begins to work, the vehicles also use electric water pumps to maintain optimal engine temperature when they’re stopped.
Should my car be at 0 rpm when stopped?
If the tach read 0 RPM (revolutions per minute) the engine would not be running and would have to be started before the car will move. The above does not apply to hybrid and newer cars with start/stop technology. These cars can and will turn off the engine when stopped for a period of time.
When does a stop start on a car work?
It’s worth remembering here that stop-start will only work when conditions are ‘just right’, meaning, if it’s too cold or too hot and the HVAC is working overtime to keep your warm or cool then the stop-start will switch off the engine but then a split-second later turn it back on again to prevent the battery from being overloaded.
When to Rev the engine in a car?
Most modern vehicles have the rev limiter, which is preset by the manufacturers, and they restrict its maximum speed. Before you rev the engine up, it should be running; hence you should turn it on. Once the car is on, allow it to idle for 20-30 seconds. During this time, oil circulates to all moving parts of the engine.
What happens to the engine when you stop the car?
Once the vehicle is stationary the engine is killed until the driver either dips the clutch and slots a gear (on a manual vehicle; to activate it the driver needs to put the transmission into neutral) or you come off the accelerator pedal and onto the brake and stop the car (on a vehicle with an automatic transmission).
What happens to auto stop start when the hood is closed?
As it turns out, engine auto-stop-start does not operate if the car is started with the hood open. Moreover, the system remains off even after the hood is closed, effectively disabling the system from functioning until the next key cycle. For those who despise the system, this could be welcomed knowledge.
