Do you have to sand high build primer before painting?
Usually if I use the high build primer, I use it first, block with 180 and then re prime with some Primer Surfacer instead of the Primer Filler, then wet sand with a paint stick and 400 grit. 400 Grit will work fine for primer and you won’t have to worry about sand scratches in paint.
Does high build primer work?
High build primes gives you an even surface for the paint to absorb evenly. You can use it, but it won’t benefit you other than priming the substrate, depending on which hb primer you use. Some require a additional primer. SW high build is good and does not.

Yes a ‘sealer’ is required and yes you’re done because epoxy-primer is the ultimate ‘sealer’.
Is high build primer the same as filler primer?
Filler primers In most cases, the filler primer or high-build primer is also a urethane product. Because it has the texture to fill pits and imperfections in the sheet metal, an unsanded primer coat would be too rough to paint over without further preparation, which includes a sealing primer.
Should I wet sand or dry sand primer?
It’s best to wet sand when you’re looking for a super smooth finish, or when sanding is going to create a huge mess, and you’re willing to spend a long time sanding to avoid that. If you have a lot of material to remove, then dry sanding is probably a better choice.
How long before you can sand high build primer?
DRY & RECOAT When dry, the surface can be immediately recoated, top coated or wet sanded. For best results, allow Filler Primer to dry for 1 hour before dry sanding. Test in an inconspicuous area to be sure Primer is dry enough for sanding. Block sand the area using 320-400 grit sandpaper.
Will high build primer fill pinholes?
Any high-quality automotive primer will cover and hide the scratches. Pinholes are not so easy to fix. Pinholes are the tiny voids, bubbles, and pits caused by air that got mixed into the dry micro. Unfortunately, primer is very thick and does a horrible job of filling pinholes.
Can you spray bare metal over high build primer?
If you are talking about those tiny rust spots in the pictures you posted I would scuff the primer down to bare metal to remove any rust then spray high build primer over those spots. Some purists will tell you you can’t do it that way. That epoxy primer must be used over ALL bare metal.
Do I use a sealer before primer?
You should apply two coats of sealer and let it dry thoroughly in-between each layer. Sealing also provides an easier surface to apply subsequent paint layers starting with a primer. Sealing is important to acrylic painters to remove any chance of Support Induced Discolouration.
Can you paint on top of high primer?
Flatting with a guide coat. A guide coat is a thin mist of colour applied over high build primer and then wet flatted off. Using the top coat colour prevents problems with painting over any guide coat that isn’t completely sanded off. 600 grit wet sandpaper is appropriate as a base for the colour coats.
What will high build primer cover?
High build primer can be a god send if you have a small imperfection in a panel, you can hide small scratches, small dents, etc etc as long as you know what you are doing. I generally will put 2 or 3 good coats on an iffy panel, let it dry then dust with a dark spray can then wet flat back with 800.
