Can you talk about different sizes of tires?
If you want to talk different sizes of tires or any kind of wheel changes we have a good thread for this broad topic already going here in Maintenance, the Wheel/Tyre Discussion, or a whole slew of such threads over in Customizing and Modifications. So please, let’s stick to strictly straight-up tire replacement here as much as possible.
How are wheel offsets calculated on tiresize.com?
Also calculated are the differences in tire diameter, width, aspect ratio, and revolutions per mile along with changes to key measurement differences. The distance from the top of the tire to the fender well, the inside of the tire to the vehicle’s suspension and frame, and the poke of the tire are all shown.
What does a 45 aspect ratio tire look like?
In this example, the 45 indicates that the sidewall distance, from the wheel rim to the outside of the tread, is 45% of the section width. A lower aspect ratio means a lower-profile tire with a shorter sidewall, while a tire with a higher aspect ratio will have a taller sidewall and look more like a donut.
How is the width of a tire measured?
A wheel’s width is from the mounting points of the tire beads, therefore the measured width of a wheel from outside edge to outside edge is about an inch wider than spec. An 8″ wheel will measure 9″ from side to side, this makes converting offset to backspacing not so straight forward.
How to compare tire sizes and specs online?
Our tire calculators and charts allow you to convert sizes, quickly compare specs like diameter, width, sidewall and circumference, or even check your speedometer error and effective differential gearing changes. Our tools also include a unique visual experience that allows you to see and compare tire size results with actual tire images.
What should be the diameter of a new tire?
Tire diameter can vary slightly for each tire model. The listed diameters are from calculations based on the tire size. When changing tire sizes, we recommend staying within 3% of the diameter/height of the original tire.
What do you need to know about replacing tires?
If you’re going to replace your tires with something equivalent, you will need to know the proper size. The size of car and light truck tires is usually expressed in a short series of numbers and letters that read like this (as seen in the above illustration): 245/40-R18.
How is the size of a European tire measured?
If there’s no letter before the first number, you have a metric tire most commonly referred to as European size. It’s also measured in millimeters but may have different load capacity than a P or LT tire. B: TIRE WIDTH The three-digit number following the letter is the tire’s width (from side to side, looking at the tire head on) in millimeters.
