Long story shorter after getting rod out found the lobe on cam damaged. Then found the reason, the spring clip (467-4243 in a C-9) had broke letting the lifter turn sideways in bore at times and messing up the cam. In our case it also messed up the lifter bore in the block, Cat bought us a new reman short block!
