Can you change the headlight on a Subaru Outback?
YUP — the GEN4 Outback is the WORST headlight change I have ever encountered. (Subaru corrected this with the GEN5) The easiest I have ever seen was VW new Beetle. Flip a lever under the hood and the ENTIRE headlight assembly slides out the front of the vehicle.
How to replace the low beam on a Subaru Outback?
For the GEN4 Outback… either access from infront of front wheel… or remove bumper. This is one of the BIG reasons the GEN5 hoodline was re-designed…so access to the bulbs was once-again from under the hood as it should be. The job was definitely a pain in the a$$, but I got it done!

Remove halogen projector and replace with hid projector.
Are there good replacement assemblies for Subaru Outback?
The replacement assemblies I bought on Ebay are much clearer and brighter but optically they are not a good as the OEM. There are strange distortions that are visible when the lights are projected onto a nearby wall although I don’t see a problem on the road.

When you change the headlight on your Outback, it is important to not touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers because the oil from your fingertips will cause that part of the bulb to burn hotter, which significantly shortens the life of the bulb.
