Can I use gasket maker on oil drain plug?
RTV can only be applied to a clean surface. An open drain bolt hole is never going to be 100% dry and clean. There will always be a bit of oil coming out of that hole.
Can crush washers be reused?
If ya take a look at a used crush washer, you can see how they work: they plastic deform into the imperfections of the sealing surfaces. When you reuse them, they will never end up in the same place and the now unflat surfaces will not seal.
Can transmission oil be reused?
Yes. The Environmental Protection Agency considers transmission fluid (along with motor oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid) waste oil products. All can be recycled into new fluids, or burned to generate energy (which is not really recycling, but is certainly better than dumping it in a landfill).
What to use to seal a transmission drain plug?
If someone has been wrapping too much material in there, if may be causing cracking around the drain hole. Normally for nasty ones I use one coat of dope… a couple wraps of teflon… then apply more dope and “usually” that fixes it. If you can get access to some small taps/dies for NPT maybe try lightly cleaning the threads.
Where is the drain plug on a transmission pan?
The transmission drain plug is mounted on the pan towards the front of the car. It requires the same 8mm square plug that the engine oil pan uses. With the back of the car raised, you should be able to get most of the fluid out, but probably not all of it.
Can you drain the transmission pan gasket again?
Be aware that you will not get all the fluid out. The torque converter holds on to fluid, and simply jacking up the car higher after draining could cause more fluid to shift into the pan. I had drained mine before removing the engine/transmission and had recently reinstalled it, but didn’t think to drain the transmission again.
Is there thread sealant for oil pan drain plugs?
If you can get access to some small taps/dies for NPT maybe try lightly cleaning the threads. With newer automotive oil pan drain plugs, you can also get oversized plugs but I doubt you would get one in that style of plug/thread.

Do you need to seal tapered drain plugs?
In a perfect world, tapered thread drain plugs should seal without a sealer. The problem with that is antiques are not perfect – most are far from it. Even in the plumbing & heating business it’s recommended to use a sealer on tapered thread.
Can a oil pan drain plug be too big?
With newer automotive oil pan drain plugs, you can also get oversized plugs but I doubt you would get one in that style of plug/thread. Might be worth checking out if the problem persists, but again, be careful because going too big can split a casting or pan.
