Are time SERTs permanent?
Time Sert thread repair offers a permanent fix the first time OR when a Helicoil or Keensert fails. The Time Sert thread repair system employs a thin wall, self locking, solid bushing insert with positive placement on installation for “accurate specific depths”.
How does a Timesert work?
TIME-SERT® is self locking. On installation the bottom internal threads of the insert are cold rolled to expand the mating external threads into the base material locking the insert in place. Locking mechanism is at the bottom of insert. to repair threads in stripped or damaged holes.
Are HeliCoil stronger than original threads?
Our frank advice based on experience of about 40 years is that there is not a stronger thread at original size than a wire thread insert of correct length and fitted properly. However, there are some uses for thin walled thread inserts where we would not recommend helicoil type inserts but Time-Serts.
Are helicoils strong?
Helicoils are an excellent piece of kit but are only stronger if fitted correctly so many times ive seen these come out when torqueing down when not fitted correctly by so called tradesman!
What is the advantage of using a helicoil or time SERT when repairing a threaded hole?
The only advantage to a Helicoil I found, is that it is cheaper. Being in the industry for a little while I have seen time and time again, that cheaper is never better. Do not cut corners, no matter what you are talking about. Tools for purchase, procedures, products etc.
Can helicoils be removed?
Removing helicoils is a very difficult task, but it can be done with a helicoil extraction tool. This should wedge the tool into the helicoil and it can then be removed by turning counter clockwise. Often times you will have to make a custom tool in order to get this option to work.

TIME-SERT® requires drilling, counterboring, and tapping before installing the insert. A typical TIME-SERT kit, with all the required tools and several inserts, costs around $74.

Can a TIME SERT be re-inserted into a hole?
Yes, if the threads in the base material are not damaged a new TIME-SERT can be re-inserted into that hole. This is a common practice on CNC pallet changers. When an insert starts to show wear over time, the insert can be removed with a screw extractor then replaced with a new one.
