There isnt really any “tell tale” problems with the rancher 420’s…or any real honda for that matter….its all dependant upon the previous owners upkeep. if he used it for water riding, steer clear, your almost garunteed to have some sort of electrical problem down the road.

What to do if your Honda ATV won’t shift?
While the atv is still running, manually shift it back in to neutral and shut it off. It should be reset once you turn it back on and re start. Thats how mine was until i replaced the sensor. Be sure to use dielectric grease on the sensor plug.
