Are there any problems with the Cadillac Northstar engine?
Say what you will about Cadillac, but they practically reinvented the market for top-end cleaners, fuel system cleaners and head gasket sealers. In addition to the aforementioned problems, Northstars of all years have a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets.
Are all 4.6 North Star engines subject to head gasket failures?
Most aluminum engines don’t have head gasket problems so uh yeah northstars are more prone to head gasket failures. It sounds like 2005+ is the way to go but it’ll probably take a couple more years for problems with them to show up. I remember a few years ago it was said that 2000-2001s had the problem fixed too.
Is the Northstar 4.6L V8 still in production?
The two basic versions of the 4.6L V8 (275 and 300 hp) are still being used in model year 2003, and there are no plans to replace this engine in the immediate future. So it looks like the Northstar V8 will continue to enjoy a long production run.

Despite the use of the Northstar engine in various cars that did well on the market, General Motors stopped producing the Northstar engine in 2011. The last cars to ever house the engine was the Cadillac DTS, the Buick Lucerne, and the Cadillac STS, which came off the line for the last time in 2011.
