Will 10W40 hurt a 5w40 engine?
SprayShack said: Aslong as its fully synthetic it will be fine. 5w – 40 will be better for colder conditions, 10w is thicker to start with thus doesnt get to places around the engine as quickly as 5w-40, but it all depends on temperature.
Is 5w-40 oil better than 10W40?
The 5W40 is thinner than the 10W40 at lower temperatures. But when the temperature is higher, both motor oils similarly perform their intended functions (using the same viscosity). However, the main difference between these two engine types is that the 5W40 can work better than 10W40 in very cold places.
Can you use 10W-40 oil on an engine?
In this case you can either fix your engine or go to 10W-40 oil. Note that 10W-40 oil in this case will not fix the engine, it helps you squeeze as much life as you can from it until it fails, after some time your engine will start consuming the 10W-40 oil and so on. Your MPG will drop during this time.
Can you use 5W 30 oil in cold weather?
Your vehicle does not use 5W-30 oil. The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.
What’s the difference between 5W30 and 10W30 oil?
5W30 means that the oil has a thinner consistency in cold weather and will protect your engine at lower temperatures, at less thickness than 10W30. 10W30 means the oil will be a little thicker at the same lower temperatures, and will then protect the engine the same as 5W30 at higher (operating warm) temperatures.
What kind of oil do you use on a Nissan?
The school of though was you want a thinner oil in winter and thicker in summer, not the other way around. But this was back when the 3k oil change interval days were standard. I keep it consistent with 5w30. Nissan recommends 5w-30 or 10w-30. (it’s in the owners manual) Both will work. 5w-30 is choice 1 though.
