Why is oil come out the hole on the lower unit outboard?

Why is oil come out the hole on the lower unit outboard?

Since oil is coming out of it, then the driveshaft seals (very common) are worn and will leak oil out when the motor is tilted up then lowered. The seals sit under the waterpump plate and are in the water passageway so any oil leakage will gravitate (no pun intended) to the lowest point which is the drain hole.

What is little hole next to top drain plug on lower unit of boat motor?

Sounds like the seals are bad in your unit. That is just a drain hole for any standing water left on top of the lower unit when you pull the boat out of the water.

What happens if water gets in lower unit oil?

If you have water in your oil, don’t finish the oil change because water will just seep back in when you get out on the water. This will do more damage to your gear box. Your oil plugs have gaskets. If these gaskets are frayed or they look worn, replace them.

Does gear oil float on water?

Gear Oil API Gravity If the API gravity is greater than 10, then the oil is lighter than water and will float on top of it; if the API gravity is less than 10, then the oil is heavier than water and will sink.

Is water heavier than gear oil?

Water is more dense (heavier) than oil so they can’t mix. Oil floats above the water.

Why is oil leaking from two small holes in lower unit?

Re: Oil leaking from two small holes in lower unit If you are CERTAIN that the gear oil was NOT from changing it–that is a spill you did not adequately clean or leaking fill and vent plugs–then yes, it is a cause for concern. Before you go wild, check the fill and vent gaskets to be sure they are sealing well.

Why are there weep holes in my water pump?

Those weep holes are there specifically to drain residual water out of blind recesses in the unit. During running unburned oil and exhaust residue will also collect there and weep out later. HOWEVER—If there is a bad seal on topeother at the water pump or cover plate and if you overfill the unit, lower unit oil will also exit these holes.

What to do if your iboats boat is leaking oil?

Buy new if there is any question in your mind–they are cheap. Clean the lower unit well and set a piece of cardboard or paper under it. Top off the oil and replace the plugs. Wipe any oil that is on the lower unit and let it set a couple of days. If there is still evidence of leaking, remove the lower unit and pressure test it.

Why is oil leaking from small hole in lower unit?

Oil leaking from the weep hole in the front of the case is most likely a worn shift shaft seal. They are a common failed seal that I have seen. Also it could be the upper vertical DS seals. Replacing them all is a good idea. It’s also a good idea to pick up a pressure test gauge to make sure all seals are good to go.
