Why is my chain tensioner not working on my Porsche?
Failure to clean and lubricate thoroughly may result in what is known as a noisy lifter: one that doesn’t completely engage. This can lead to degradation in engine performance. The Porsche factory manuals recommend not using a magnet to pluck the lifters from their bores (use your fingers or a mini-suction cup device instead).
How big of a torque wrench do I need to replace chain tensioner?
Reinstallation was likewise simple. Note that the tensioner bolts only need to be torqued to 10-14 Nm (7.4-10.3 ft-lb). This isn’t very much. I used an in.-lb torque wrench to get it right.
What should I do if my camshaft is stuck?
With the chain tensioner loosened, the bearing caps removed, and the VarioCam tensioner disconnected from the head, you should be able to slide the gear off of the camshaft with your hand. A few gentle taps with a small rubber hammer can also help your cause if it’s stuck.
Where is the chain tensioner on a Boxster?
There are three externally accessible chain tensioners on the Boxster motor. The one shown here tensions the chain for cylinders 4-6, and is by far the most difficult to reach. It’s located underneath the air conditioning compressor, inside the cylinder head, and is accessible from inside the engine compartment.
How much does it cost to replace twin cam chain tensioner?
The inspection and replacement of the inner shoe is expensive and involves removing the oil pump and cam, the outer one shoe is easier but you have to check both of them. Our dealership wanted $400 just to inspect the shoes, which they wouldn’t do because they said if they get that far into it they might as well just replace them.
Are there any problems with the Harley Davidson cam chain tensioners?
Harley, of course, made a fairly expensive upgrade including a new oil pump and hydraulic cam chain tensioners run by the engine oil and re-designed shoes. They also went to a new style chain. The new design is very reliable and as of like 2009 I haven’t heard of any problems with them.
Is there a problem with hydraulic cam chain followers?
Some believe that the problem still exists even with the new hydraulic cam chain followers, but we are not seeing that at all. Our opinion is that if you have an affected model that you take action as soon as you can and avoid the impending problem all together since you can’t predict when it will happen.

What’s the timing tool on a Porsche Boxster?
Normally, you would use Porsche tool 9624 to hold the camshafts onto the end of the motor (see Photo 3 of Pelican Technical Article: Boxster Engine Teardown ), but I found that the camshaft timing tool also pretty much did an adequate job of holding them in place as well.
What is the tensioner on a VR6 timing chain?
Each timing chain has a guide rail (curved on the upper chain, straight on the lower chain) and tensioner rail to keep them tight. The lower tensioner rail is a one-piece, spring-driven unit, while the upper tensioner is a two-piece design consisting of a tensioner rail and a separate tensioner bolt.
How to do timing chain and guides replacement?
The procedure assumes that the transmission, clutch, flywheel, upper intake manifold and other small parts (coilpack, TB, airbox …) have been removed from the car and that other steps necessary to remove these have also been performed (front end of car raised, battery disconnected, etc).
Where can I get 12 point timing chain?
If you need triple square bits (like Torx bits but with 12 points instead of 6 – also called serrated or 12-point bits) in order to remove things like a flywheel or axle bolts, you can buy K-D bits from your local Napa Auto Parts store (can also buy them on-line).
What kind of noise does timing chain make?
This sound has been described most often as “marbles in a can” or like a sewing machine (see below for sound clip of noise). When the timing chain parts are in good working order, the chains are under considerable tension and NOTHING should be loose enough to rattle.
