Why does my Mercedes C300 make a noise when I start the car?
According to that theory the camshaft adjusters have to build up oil pressure which makes the sound. This sounds more logical to me since on a warm start the engine timing is probably different from a cold start and maybe just that adjustment needs oil pressure in the system.

Why does my Mercedes whine when I accelerate?
Check the Belt and tensioner as Jomzo says. You can probably get it to fail by revving the throttle body with the hood up. Turn the a/c on too and see if you get a screech out of the belt when it engages. If the belt shows ANY signs of wear replace it. Checking, discoloration, or small pieces missing are all signs worth paying attention to.
