Why does my Honda lawn mower only run in choke mode?
Wouldn’t hurt to go through the fuel system from tank to line to carburetor including fuel bowl under the carb. Could be some dirt or water in the float bowl. Would be a good idea to drain it anyway, let all that old gas out. Sediments will settle out and interfere with the fuel pickup causing fuel starvation issues.

What happens when you turn off the choke on an engine?
The choke increases the amount of fuel in the mixture, creating a richer mixture. This allows the engine to function at its best until it has warmed up enough to run on its normal operating fuel mixture. At that point the choke is turned off and the engine runs with a leaner fuel/air mixture.
