Why does my car make a running water sound?

I’ve recently noticed that when this “running water” sound occurs that it is more prominent when the engine is running faster (e.g. during acceleration).

What makes a sloshing noise under the dash?

Sometimes when I start it up, begin moving forward, or quickly decelerate I can hear what sounds like water (or some other liquid) moving from one place to another (can’t quite tell where) under the dash or maybe just behind the firewall.

Why does my car make a sloshing sound when I accelerate?

@JimFell I think you’re associating the increased prominence of the sound with the wrong trigger. As you said, under normal circumstances, your car is accelerating when the engine is running faster. When there is water in a container, and that container experiences acceleration, inertia will cause the water to move around within the container.

What should I do if I hear a noise under my car?

Look under you hood, or from the underside of the car for a rubber tube sticking out of the firewall, you can unplug it with a coat hanger, or piece of wire. The picture below may be what you have, if not it will at least give you an idea of what you are looking for.

Why do I hear a ticking noise in my engine?

Exhaust manifold leaks can be caused by a blown gasket, loose or broken manifold bolts or studs, or even a cracked manifold. If you smell exhaust from the engine compartment and hear a ticking noise, you have a leak. Look for black soot around the manifold and downpipe connection.

What can I do about a noisy water pump in my car?

The only fix for a noisy water pump is to replace it. Because of its location (often under the timing belt cover and bolted to the engine block), an awful lot of parts have to be removed to get to it, so it can take several hundred dollars worth of labor to replace a $50 part.

What to do when your car is making weird noises?

If you have belt dressing, this is what you do: when the engine is running, just spray it on each belt to see which belt starts to quiet down. Inspect your engine belts for cracks, damage, and tension, and replace or adjust them as needed. If playback doesn’t begin shortly, try restarting your device.
