Why do timing chains fail?
A timing chain can break with either too much or not enough tension. If the chain does not have enough tension, it can develop slack. A chain with too much tension can also fail, as it is placed under excessive stress. Tension increases friction and heat in the chain, which can result in failure.
When do you need a belt drive and timing chain?
But if you’re building an engine with a hotter cam, stiffer valve springs and a higher red line, upgrading to some type of aftermarket timing chain set, gear drive or even a belt drive may be in order. Obviously, there are a lot of ways to spin a camshaft.
What kind of chains are used in drag racing?
Many roller chain kits come with billet steel cam and crank sprockets for added strength and wear resistance. Double roller chains are used successfully in all types of performance applications, including street, drag, circle track, off-road and marine.
Why are valve and ignition timings not changed?
Valve and ignition timing won’t change once the system is installed because there is no chain stretch. This eliminates variations in cam and ignition timing as well as any worries about timing changes over time. Many heavy-duty diesels have gear drives for this reason.
Which is better a belt drive or a chain drive?
Most of these tests have found very little difference from one cam drive setup to another, usually no more than a couple of horsepower difference. At really high RPM (over 7,000 RPM), belt drives do show an advantage with a power gain that may be as much as 10 to 14 hp over a chain or gear drive.
What kind of timing chain do I Need?
Timing chain options include both standard and roller chains to provide matches with the high quality sprockets and if necessary tensioner and guides that fit the application. Both OEM and performance timing chain kits are available. Melling chains and sprockets are manufactured using the highest designs, quality materials and workmanship.
How are Cloyes timing chains pre-stressed and heat treated?
Cloyes Timing Chains, which are available in kits or as a stand-alone product, are pre-stressed and heat-treated for increased durability. Cloyes parts are CAD designed and manufactured using premium materials. Each part is extensively tested and measured for function, fitment, and durability to ensure optimal performance
Who makes the better ( best ) timing belt-maintenance?
Both places have gladly handed me MOOG suspension parts, Melling oil pumps, Fel-Pro gasket sets, Bosch O2 sensors, Goodyear belts and hoses, Perfect Circle piston rings, Timken bearings, Motorcraft alternators/starters, Raybestos brakes, etc., etc. I’ve never had a problem with Car Quest either; at least when we had one in this area.
Who is the manufacturer of the Carquest timing belt?
CarQuest timing belts are made by Gates. Any idea of what stores carry what brands? While it is true that the manufacturers don’t make the belts, any belt that carries their name is made to their specifications. Belts from non-OEM manufacturers don’t necessarily meet the same specifications.
