Where is the CDI box located?
Here’s a CDI box in a dirt bike. You’ll often find them lurking under your seat. Andy Greaser photo. The basic CDI system is a trigger mechanism, coils, and a box, often black, with capacitors and other circuitry inside.
Can you bypass a CDI box on a scooter?
Yes, you can with a mechanical unit. But customizing one will take lots of time and effort. It might be even more costly to custom build one as the CDI on the market shelf is mass produced one hence efficiently produced. That will keep it’s price reasonably low.
Are all CDI units the same?
Because ignition characteristics (particularly timing) vary widely across vehicle models, there’s no one CDI box that can cover them all. The CDI must be matched to the engine that’s being worked on. The CDI boxes in these systems are not interchangeable.
Is the CDI on a scooter good or bad?
One advantages of the CDI is that they are not sensitive to shunt resistance. The CDI box, however, does not give enough ignition efficiency because its spark duration is short. Professional help. Every scooter owner or lover should know that CDI models are either AC or DC. These two types work differently.
What does CDI stand for on a dirt bike?
CDI stands for capacitor discharge ignition (alternatively, “capacitive.”) If you’re new to capacitors, they’re similar to batteries in that they can store energy for later. What sets them apart is their ability to release all that energy near instantaneously, which is ideal for an ignition circuit. Here’s a CDI box in a dirt bike.
Do you need a DC CDI module for a Kymco?
KYMCO owners please note most of our CDI modules are AC. KYMCO scooters require DC CDI modules. We have the correct DC CDI modules for KYMCO scooters in stock.
What’s the difference between CDI and TCI ignitions?
For the purposes of this article, I’ll refer to all the black box ignitions as CDI, since they all use the same basic components: box, coils, sensor. This is a TCI box. On an electrical engineering level, it’s different from CDI, but the troubleshooting process is the same.

Is the CDI on my Honda Ruckus restricted?
Honda Ruckus/Zoomer appear to be CDI restricted. Tho, since performance of the stock 4-st Honda GET engine is very limited some people state different results. Don’t expect too much from installing an unrestricted CDI. Pretty much all of the Chinese 50cc scooters have a restricted CDI installed.
How can I tell if my CDI has a problem?
When the fuel pump has a problem, spark plugs or coil packs are faulty, you would observe similar symptoms. Therefore, the only way you can tell whether your CDI has a problem is by confirming that everything else is in the right condition. The reason is that there is no particular way of testing the condition of the CDI.
How does a CDI ignition system work on a bike?
The keyway on the magnet is offset to the poles of the magnet. Maybe putting it on backwards cause the sparkplug to spark somewhere other than close to top dead center of the piston. I pulled the magnet off, turned it around and put it back on. EUREKA! Bike fired right up and runs like a dream.
