Where does the distributor get its power from?
The distributor contains, among other parts, a rotor that spins, and a number of contacts mounted to the distributor cap. Power from the ignition coil is supplied to the rotor. The rotor spins in time with the engine. When the end of the rotor is near one of the contacts, electricity arcs to the contact.
What does a loose distributor cap do?
A faulty distributor cap can cause your engine to stall. Voltage must be produced by the spinning distributor rotor for the engine to keep running. If the rotor does not rotate properly, the engine loses power and stalls out as you’re trying to drive. The longer you let this go on, the worse it will get.
How many volts does a 6 volt distributor have?
A distributor is divided in to two different systems or levels of voltage. The points only act as a switch that puts 6 volts though the primary winding of the coil which excites the secondary winding in the coil which is the big wire that goes to the center of the distributor cap and in these older vehicles puts out 25,000 to 30,000 volts.
Can you read 6 volts from negative terminal?
This is the part I am having a hard time understanding (no kidding). The positive terminal of coil will only get a ground connection through the points or possibly a trans kickdown switch. With the ignition switch on, you should be able to read 6 volts to the negative terminal of coil.

Who knows, the problem might be at the source in the campground or storage facility.
