DUKORAL® is available at your local pharmacy or travel clinic. If you are taking DUKORAL® for cholera, it does require a prescription.
How good is DUKORAL?
In the study in Bangladesh, the protective effectiveness of Dukoral was 85% over the first six months of follow-up. The length of protection was different for adults and children, lasting for six months in children and for two years in adults. In adults, two vaccine doses were shown to be as effective as three.
When should DUKORAL be taken?
Dukoral is taken as 2 doses 1 week apart on an empty stomach. The doses should be stored in the fridge until used. After completing the course, the protection will last 3 months, and as long as it has been less than 5 years from the last dose a booster dose is only required to regain protection for another 3 months.
How do you make DUKORAL?
How to take it
- Dissolve the effervescent granules from the buffer sachet in a glass of cool water (approx. 150 mL). This is the buffer solution.
- Shake the vaccine vial (1 vial = 1 dose)
- Add the entire contents of the vaccine vial to the buffer solution. Mix well and drink the entire mixture.
Can you buy Dukoral over the counter?
DUKORAL ® is a vaccine that you drink, and it is available from a pharmacist without a prescription for protection against travellers’ diarrhea. It is the only oral vaccine that protects against travellers’ diarrhea and the first dose is taken at least two weeks before departure for about three months of protection.
Why is dukoral not available in the US?
