Is the bottom end of an Evo bullet proof?
As the fine gents said. I can only add that the EVO bottom end is mostly bullet proof, in particular late EVO’s. With proper warm-up that scoot can take some serious abuse, and the ’98 cases are good for future upgrades as well. Earlier cases – like mine – can crack if bored up for larger cylinders.

The 1340cc Evolution utilizes a single, four-lobe, gear-driven camshaft located just above the crankshaft axis. While this simplifies camshaft replacement, it complicates the Big Twin valve train with tappet/lifters and pushrods that each deflect from the camshaft at wildly different angles.

Can a Harley Davidson 88 be upgraded to a 103?
You can bore to 98″, and save from splitting the cases, to replace crank. But IF going to a crank replacement, you can then, as well, bore your cylinders to the same dimension as the 98″s, and have a 107″er. In tame form, you can easily see 110/120. A great combination to upgrade an 88″ is an “over square” 107″ motor.
