When to replace spark plugs on 2016 Subaru Outback?
Hi all! The service manual of my 2016 Outback 2.5 recommends to replace the spark plugs at 60k miles. What is the consensus here on doing this? I am at 63k miles right now, so it’s about time.

I noticed my 2016 Outback limited 2.5i was not idling as smooth as it could at 61,311. I also noticed hard acceleration performance might indicate a spark plugs issues. When I pulled the plugs today at the above mileage, the gap was off significantly due to the wear of the plugs and the electrode was pretty warn.

That is $6.91 per spark plug…… so whats the point of pushing the service interval other than they are extremely difficult to change yourself and expensive if a dealer performs the service. Subaru has good reason to recommend the 60,000 service interval based on the conditions of the plugs I removed.

BTW replacing the 2 plugs on the passenger side is easy, but the two spark plugs on the drivers side are quite difficult to replace, the word nightmare comes to mind. If you want to avoid great pain, anxiety, and suffering performing the spark plug replacement yourself… you will need to acquire some special tools.

These factory spark plugs are half iridium, the ground electrode is still a platinum tip. There is a blurb from Ngk where they state that 80-100k is their expected lifetime for the platinum/iridium hybrid plug. Subaru rated these a little more conservatively at 60k miles.
