When should I replace my steering box?
Call when you see the drop arm move, and ask your helper to measure how much the steering wheel has moved. If the steering wheel has moved more than the allowed distance, the box needs adjusting or replacing by a garage.
Can you tighten up a steering box?
The bearings should be adjusted to get a few inch-pounds of drag on the worm gear (steering wheel), but you can adjust it by tightening up to remove the play, then go just a smidgen tighter..and tigthen the locknut securely. Get the steering centered (wheels straight ahead), and loosen the locknut.
Can a steering rack or gearbox wear out?

The Borgeson gear box is a direct replacement, because it is manufactured directly from the original Saginaw plans. While we were changing the box, we also upgraded the rest of the worn steering components.
