When does the wastegate actuator start to open?
Boost pressure is applied to the canister and once the boost is higher than the spring pressure inside the canister, the wastegate actuator rod starts to move and open the wastegate. The actuator doesn’t open the wastegate fully at a given single pressure.
How does the wastegate affect the turbo boost?
The more exhaust you divert through the wastegate (the more you open the wasetgate door), the more you slow the turbo down and this is how you lower boost. This wastegate is pushed open or held closed by the wastegate actuator and a number of other variables such as exhaust pressure.
How can I control boost with wastegate spring?
Controlling boost with the wastegate spring. One, expensive, complicated, limiting way of raising the amount of pressure the turbo outputs involves swapping the low pressure spring in an external wastegate to a higher pressure spring.
How does boost work in wastegate solenoid system?
This means the full boost pressure will work against the bottom of the diaphragm and the system will maintain a boost level based on the wastegate spring. If the solenoid is opened with an electrical signal then the pressure at the top and bottom of the wastegate diaphragm is equalized.

Can you change the spring inside a wastegate canister?
On OEM wastegate actuators we can’t change the spring inside the canister because they are sealed. On aftermarket actuators and external wastegates we can change the internal spring.
How does the wastegate work on a car?
It’s a valve that is controlled by an electronic solenoid that allows engine vacuum into the unit to make it open up, and in turn open the turbo’s wastegate to bleed off excessive boost, and hence not allow massive boost pressure to build up and destroy the engine.
