What would cause my RPMs to drop?
The engine RPM drop when changing gears is often caused by a failed throttle position sensor (TPS). When in use, the cone of the TPS accumulates soot that prevents the correct rod movement. If a TPS works abnormally, the air-fuel mixture will not meet the requirements.
What does it mean when your car drops RPM while idling?
This is a common sign of a dirty or failing idle air control valve. This is all controlled by the idle air control valve. When the engine RPM drops below the normal range of 750-800 RPM (for most cars), this often times will cause the engine to stall indicating a dirty or faulty idle air control valve.
What happens when engine RPM drops below 800?
However, when the engine RPM drops below the normal range of 800 RPM (for most cars), it is more than likely that you are dealing with an IAC valve problem. In cases where this valve is clogged or is failing, your vehicle will stall instead of slowing to an idle after the release of the throttle.

When does a car stall at low rpm?
The RPM goes to 0 and the engine shuts off. This only happens when travelling at low speeds (e.g. slowly accelerating from a stop, braking, moving in stop and go traffic) This NEVER happens when I’m travelling above 10 mph (e.g. if I’m coasting at 40 and let my foot off the gas, the RPM can go to 500 RPM but it will never stall in this case).
Why does my RPM drop when sitting idle at traffic lights?
While I’m sitting idle at traffic lights I put the car into neutral. The engine stays idling at about 1000 RPM. However every now and then it drops down to about 500 RPM and then quickly back up to about 1200 then goes slowly down to 1000 and stays there for a bit until I go again or it drops again.
