What makes the alt light go out on a 1970 VW?
My 1970 engine is equippedd with an alternator that has an internal regulator. My problem is that the “alt” stays on when the key is off. The light goes out when the engine is running. I have 13-14 volts at high idle.

The battery in the Chevelle was drained way down and the little 37 amp alternator on the ’69 didn’t like the strain. Damaged diodes were the result. As Ed said, repair was no big deal, took it to the local starter/alternator shop and $35 later all was well again.

Is the alternator bulb live on a VW?
The bulb itself is live (taking a black ‘+’ off the board on all aircooled VW’s, so the circuit is Earthing through the alternator (so make sure your gearbox earth strap is in good order).

If you have an alternator, then regulators are usually built in to the alternator itself. Typically, on a 6V car (1966 and older) it’s mounted on top the generator (a silver box). On a 12V car (1967 and on) it’s usually under the rear seat off to the left.
