The major difference in the various heads are the types of valves used. The LS3 821 heads had hollow-stem valves, as did the LSA supercharged engine with the 863 heads. Heads for the LS9 used titanium intake valves like the LS7. The main difference between and LSA and LS9 head are the valves.

The 706Vortec heads are even slightly superior to the commonly found 862 heads. The reason is that the 706 heads are SPM (semi-permanent mold) made, while the 862 heads are sand cast. The SPM method is considered to be a more consistent process, but once you port the 862 head, any difference to the 706 head goes away.

What is the difference between 821 and 823 heads?
From what I understand there is no real difference in the 821 and 823 other than valves and springs. The Ls3 version has the light weight valves and better springs. There is another casting number for the L92’s that is suppose to be a rougher earlier design, that would be the one to avoid unless it’s ported.
Are 799 heads better than 706?
The 799 heads offered the most flow, bettering the 706 heads by as much as 20 cfm at some lift points. The chamber volume on the 799 heads was within 2.5 cc’s of the 706 heads, but the dyno indicated this did not translate into power on our test engine.

Are 5.3 and 6.0 heads the same?
You’ll lose compression if you use cathedral port 6.0 heads on your 5.3. The chamber is larger. The rectangular ports should not be used on your engine. LS6/T56 swap is complete and I’m just enjoying the time behind the wheel.
Are 706 and 243 heads the same?
706’s have 61.5 cc chambers and 243’s have 64.5 cc chambers so you will lose compression unless you mill down the 243’s. 799 and 243 heads are generally accepted as 100% identical.
