Stampede straps, or bonnet strings, are decorated strips of leather that going around the back of the hat, through holes behind the ears, and around the neck. The purpose is to keep a cowboy’s hat on as he rides trail.
How do you make stampede strings?
- Cut the leather cording into three 3 1/2 foot pieces.
- Knot the three leather strands together, creating a 2 inch tail at the end.
- String wood beads onto the three leather strands.
- Braid the leather cording until you reach the final 3 inches.
- String wooded beads onto the leather cording to mirror the first end.

We carry two different styles of stampede strings, the Adjustable Loop Style and the Cotter Pin Style. The Adjustable Loop Style is also referred as the Double Loop Style or Full Loop Style. The Adjustable Loop Style Stampede Strings require careful installation and requires two holes to be placed in the cowboy hat that the loops pass through.
What’s the difference between cotter pin and Stampede string?
The Cotter Pin Style is much easier to install. This style requires that a cotter pin that is attached to the end of each stampede string be inserted into the seam between the hat and the sweat band. The cotter pin is expanded which helps prevent the string from being pulled out of the seam.
