What is a medical OSCE?
OSCEs or Objective Structured Clinical Exams are the ‘practical’ exam of medical school. It aims to prepare you for the clinical and communication aspects of becoming a doctor.
How are OSCEs assessed?
The OSCE progresses as candidates move from station to station, engaging in different scenarios with mock patients (actors). They are assessed by examiners at each station and receive a score based on performance. Examiners mark the score on an assessment platform such as Qpercom Observe.
How do I introduce myself to OSCE?
Greet them at the beginning of the station and make sure you introduce yourself. For example, “Hello Mrs Schmidt, I am Doctor Jones, one the Emergency Department Doctors. How can I help you today?” If appropriate, shake their hand.
How do I approach OSCE?
Tips for the OSCE:
- Always read the instructions carefully – they differ from case to case, and are specific for a particular case.
- Communication should be empathic and patient-centred.
- History-taking must be underpinned by a safe diagnostic method.
- Being systematic in physical exam allows candidates to remain focused.
What is OSCE nursing?

How is OSCE graded?
How is the OSCE graded? OSCE stations are monitored by trained observers who score the student’s performance on history taking, physical examination, information sharing skills, and interpersonal skills. The graders use an approved checklist for each station to score the student’s performance.
What do objective structured clinical exams ( OSCE ) cover?
The Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) cases cover common and important situations that a physician is likely to encounter in common medical practice in clinics, doctors’ offices, emergency departments, and hospital settings in real practice. Thus you are evaluated as if it is a real life practice.
What do you need to know about the OSCE exam?
As SPs follow strictly these scripts, OSCEs examiners also have a standard printed checklist or blueprint for each station that they have to fill out while observing you. These checklists are standardized to reduce examiners’ bias. On these checklists, there are station specific points and a general performance points to be assessed.
What do you need to know about OSCE counselling?
In an OSCE, you may be provided with these details in the brief and asked to move straight on to counselling. How long has the patient been smoking? How much does the patient smoke? (pack-years = [number of years smoked] x [average number of packs smoked per day]; one pack is equal to 20 cigarettes)
Why are SPS uncooperative in the OSCE exam?
For example, if you don’t ask about all their medication now and in the past, they wont show you a printed list of their medication. In some OSCEs, SPs are instructed to follow different paths or ask specific questions according to your performance. For example, turning uncooperative if you are not responding to their concerns or gestures.
