What happens when the motor is shifted into gear?

That switch is not supposed to trip when the motor is shifted into gear. only when it comes out of gear, and then for only a milli-second. That switch momentarily kills the ignition (when it is working correctly) so you can get the boats gears to disengage.

What should the engine RPM be when in gear?

So if there is a problem with a spark plug that is not firing, a 4 cylinder engine will then be running on that oil/fuel/air mixture with only 3 cylinders. The “in gear” RPM’s should be around 700-800.

Why does my engine cut out when I put in gear?

When it is sticking and killing the motor going in to gear, It means the lower shift cable, The cable that goes to the transom assy, is corroded and tight. It needs to be replaced. And I’m guessing that means I’ll have to remove the stern drive and maybe the gimball housing. Then I have to put on a new transom gasket? Ok. Thanks for your help.

Can a motor run, but not under load?

So a motor with a faulty or open circuit switch will not start even under no load, just hums but will go if give shaft a spin (in either direction). however the pulleys, belts and drive shaft couplings you describe sound like much higher than this. Would you be able to post a picture?

Why does the motor cut off after I put it in gear?

Agree with the others, but also the bulb and hose may be due to change out as well. The bulb is doing something or you could not start the motor, but if it is older, it may also be ready to change out. Do it all at once. Yep, a dirty fuel system would be my guess too.

What happens when I put my outboard in gear?

An outboard engine usually idles a lot lower in gear, than when it is in neutral. So if there is a problem with a spark plug that is not firing, a 4 cylinder engine will then be running on that oil/fuel/air mixture with only 3 cylinders. The “in gear” RPM’s should be around 700-800. Without that other cylinder they can drop to 400-500 RPM’s.

What do you do when your motor dies?

Motor started fine, idled fine, but when I gave it some gas it wanted to die. If I backed off the throttle it would run. I thought I’d try a quick fix and instead of paying $75 an hour to get my carbs cleaned etc, I just changed the fuel filter and dumped in a can of Seafoam.
