What does the clutch diode do on a motorcycle?
Power enters via the key switch, through the start button and then the solenoid, and is grounded through either the neutral switch or the clutch switch. The diode makes it so that only the neutral switch can light the indicator light (current cannot flow through the light and into the neutral switch).
What is diode in motorcycle?
Some metric bikes have 2 indicator lights on the dash for the turn signals, one for left and one for right. A diode in the circuit at the indicator light will prevent the current from travelling in the wrong direction and allow the front turn signals to flash properly.
What happens when a diode is off?
If the voltage across a diode is negative, no current can flow*, and the ideal diode looks like an open circuit. In such a situation, the diode is said to be off or reverse biased. As long as the voltage across the diode isn’t negative, it’ll “turn on” and conduct current.
What is 1N4001 diode used for?
The 1N400x (or 1N4001 or 1N4000) series is a family of popular one-ampere general-purpose silicon rectifier diodes commonly used in AC adapters for common household appliances. Its blocking voltage varies from 50 volts (1N4001) to 1000 volts (1N4007).
What causes a zener diode to fail?
Most of the zener diodes fail due to the excess power dissipation across it. Each zener has a rated power dissipation by manufacturer when the power dissipation is greater than the rated then it fails. The power dissipation is the product of voltage drop across the zener and the current flow through it.
Why do you need a diode in a clutch?
Hednut, the diode is required to give proper indication of the neutral light. If you replaced the diode with a short length of wire the neutral light will light up every time the clutch was pulled in – when changing gears for example.

When did the Honda Shadow Bike come out?
The Shadow has been a popular model for many years. BikeBandit.com carries parts for models dating back to 1983, when it was first introduced, along with Honda Shadow 750 parts for fans of the most powerful model.
Is it cheap to put a diode in a bike?
As I say, a diode is fairly cheap, you can put any one and keep the electrics as they were. I have bikes with clutch switch and without, sometimes I push the starter with the clutch engaged and the bike pushes forward, but never had any accident. I mean, you can’t live without it, but it won’t hurt you and the price of a diode is cheap insurance.
