Access the solenoid: Lift the rubber mat off the tray and remove the two tray screws. You will see the solenoid. It’s a white cylinder with a metal bar protruding rearward toward the shifter. You might opt to remove the center console too. Quick Fix: If you’re in a jam and need to remove the key without disassembling things read on.

There is a sensor that it not working in the drive train. Sometimes it thinks the car is not in Park and will not release the key. We had the same issue but they fixed it and gave us a loaner car at Subaru of Delray Beach. 2016 Subaru Crosstrek key stuck in ignition.

Why is my CVT key stuck in the ignition?

Had this happen to me today, 2013 crosstrek,cvt. to get the key out, started car put shifter in manual mode (which I don’t use) and back into park, key came out. Possibility lack of manual mode use has made linkage or solenoid sticky, don’t know for sure, first time it’s happened to me in 6 years.
