What does A&P IA mean?

What does it take to become an IA?
In order to take the IA exam, you must have an original signed 8610-1 form (application for Inspection Authorization and one valid forms of identification). Foreign students must have a passport and a second form of valid identification. You will need to contact your local FSDO to obtain the 8610 form.
What can an IA do?
IA mechanics are able to do a wider variety of maintenance activities and alterations than any other type of maintenance personnel. They can do comprehensive annual inspections or return aircraft to service after a major repair.
Can an IA delegate his inspection duties?
The holder of an IA must personally perform the inspection. The regulations do not provide for delegation of this responsibility. Approving major repairs and major alterations is a serious responsibility.
Can an IA supervise an annual inspection?
The basic functions of the holder of an inspection authorization (IA) are set forth in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 65, § 65.95. Also, the holder of an IA may perform an annual inspection and he or she may supervise or perform a progressive inspection.

ANSWER: No. An airframe and powerplant mechanic (A&P) cannot perform or sign off an annual inspection unless that person also holds an Inspection Authorization (IA).
